To acknowledge some of the previous posts - I ran some numbers on the AoE damage of air prior and post update comparing with fire.

Made it clear to see why the old Invoke+Chain build was preferred for hard mode areas. Was competitive with fire up to 3 targets at AL60 and significantly better than fire up to 4 targets at AL100.

Which one is better for heroes? Shatterstone or Water trident?

^Shatterstone. But just stay away from water magic if possible. If you are melee, equip your hero with gust for excellent aggro control and speed buff. Else you can replace Ether Renewal with Energy Boon for your E/Mo healer hero.

Neither, use ward against harm great skill!
Shatterstone gets worse the faster you kill....
Water trident might be worth while with 2-3 eles spamming, but it lags behind elite skills from other lines.
Hero AI on both skills IMO is not effective enough.

This got me through HM shards of orr, duncan (with a lot of rainbow canes needed, swap instead of arcane echo, FS on the ST rit), several other dungeons and now vanquishes in Eotn:

The shatterstone can be replaced with a panic mesmer if you still like to use one, or any other elly build, but the hexes and snare helps a couple of air skills and the AoEs, and maelstrom is great for caster shutdown.

You need to micro the ST, I keep union and displacement turned off and just need shelter for most things. When the other two spirits are needed I manually click them.

Im going to swap ice spikes to deep freeze though because it has a longer snare time.

Oh, and if you dont have a mercenary rit, you can put SoS on a necro instead.

This isn't a particularly high achievement, especially now.

Probably not, but I was just posting a build that worked for me with several elly bars in a relevant thread, thats all.

Thats mainly because Im simply rubbish at pulling + flagging, and I didnt know the dungeons at all. I was agroing full mobs of dwarves and restless dead in duncan, and too many undead skellies at once in shards of orr.

Im now thinking that my air hero would be better replaced with the dual attunement fire build in the OP, and maybe either the water one or the Sogm rit too.

haven't played the game in awhile. considering a reboot with some skill updates.

how does an earth build using Obsidian Flame + Second Wind for bar compression look nowadays? armor ignoring damage + energy management in just two skills leaves a lot of room for utility so long as enchants aren't necessary.

I don't know what your idea is, but Second Wind and Obsidian Flame both cause exhaustion. You can't spam Obsidian Flame. Maybe Necrosis and Second Wind.

But now that you mention Second Wind, I'll share the bar I'm vanquishing with at the moment:

Energy Storage: 12+1+3
Domination magic: 12
* Wastrel's Worry
* Wastrel's Demise
* "You Move Like A Dwarf!"
* Snow Storm
* Overload
* Cry of Pain
* Shatter Delusions
* Second Wind

Just spam-cancel Second Wind until you're at about 50% exhaustion when you start an area (100+ base energy recommended), and then just spam spam spam until you're low on energy and cast Second Wind for a full refill. No hassle with enchantment removal, and an interrupt of Second Wind is not a big deal as you can recast 5 seconds later. You will never run out of energy as long as you remember to use your last 5 energy to cast Second Wind.

The build becomes even more awesome with the right team. Mesmers in particular are awesome as they often prevent skills from being used. Personally, I use a Panic mesmer, a Shared Burden mesmer and a Water necro (No need to discuss this. People already told me i'm an idiot for bringing a water necro. I simply disagree). Often, the screen is filled with big yellow numbers when you AoE spike 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 in the middle of a big mob.

you certainly can't use obsidian flame at every recharge, but you can use it indefinitely once every 15 seconds and using it more often early on allows you to build up a useful level of exhaustion for second wind while putting out respectable armor-ignoring burst damage on its own.

(as an aside, i don't use PvE skills like necrosis as i really think a-net screwed up by including them in the first place)

Exhaustion spells have negative synergy with each other, and that includes Second Wind. Unless you are building a Glyph of Energy build, you generally only want one Exhaustion skill on your bar. The simple reason being that in the long run you'll only be able to cast half as much of each exhaustion spell.

This is especially true with Obsidian Flame And Second Wind that both have low cooldowns. There is no reason whatsoever to put both on the same bar.
